Gary Player


Widely recognised as one of the best golfers ever, Gary Player is a South African former professional golfer who was also known as The Black Knight and International Ambassador of Golf when in action on the green. A nine-times champion, Gary is an icon in the golfing world and is a household name amongst most. Throughout a decorated 53 year-long career, he has amassed an impressive amount of knowledge surrounding key topics from setting and achieving goals to performing under pressure in which he is able to relate to corporate organisations as an after dinner speaker.

A determined player throughout his amateur career, Gary set his sights on becoming the world number one by the time he was 16. Turning professional only a year later, it didn’t take him long to establish himself as a golfer with an abundance of skill. Throughout the 1950’s during the American golf boom, Player competed frequently in the PGA Tour and eventually topped the money list in 1961.

Now with the third-highest amount of professional wins in the world, Gary boasts an incredible number of 152 victories and has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame for his consistency unbeatable performances. Some of his greatest achievements include winning the Masters Tournament and the Open Championship on three separate occasions, the PGA Championship twice and the US Open making him the only golfer outside of the USA to take first place at all four major championships.

With his talent not going unrecognised, Gary was voted Sportsman of the Century in 2000 and also received the highest honour achievable from the United States Golf Association, the Bob Jones Award. On top of his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, he has also had the Gary Player – A Global Journey exhibition launched in his honour.

Since his retirement in 2009, Gary continues to raise money for education, nutrition and medical care for disadvantaged children in South Africa with The Player Foundation. He also remains tied to his sport as he launched a golf course designing company, Gary Player Design, who were heavily considered to design the 2016 Summer Olympics course and operate in more than 36 countries. An established businessman, Gary has also launched Player Real Estate, Gary Player Academies and Black Knight Enterprises as well as having authored or co-authored nearing 40 books.
