Professional footballer, player manager, and television commentator, Tony Cottee has a list of impressive credentials to his name. As one of England’s most high profile goal scorers in the 80s and 90s, he has become a popular name on the after dinner speaker circuit thanks to his twenty years in the professional sporting industry.

Beginning his professional career at West Ham United in 1983, he scored five goals in his first eight games and a further fifteen in the next season. Establishing himself as a rising star, Cottee continued to impress, amassing an impressive 37 goals in the league by the age of twenty. The talented striker was an asset to the team during his six years at West Ham United, where he was pivotal in them placing third in the league, their highest position to date. By 1988 when Cottee signed for Everton, he had achieved 212 league goals in 92 games.

Scoring a hat-trick in his debut match for Everton, there was no doubt of Cottee’s talent. Despite a few poor seasons for the team overall, Cottee was hailed as a champion for his 99 goals scored, and his assisting in reaching the 1989 FA Cupfinal. After a brief return to his original team, West Ham, Cottee transferred to Selangor in Malaysia where he won the FAM Cup.

Finishing his career on a high with Leicester City, Cottee had achieved 293 goals in all 712 professional games he had played. Throughout his impressive playing career, Tony Cottee also represented England, obtaining a total of seven caps for the senior squad and eight for the under 21s. After retiring from the game in 2000, Cottee turned his hand to managing and took on the position of player-manager at Barnet.

Since his days on the field and sidelines finished, Cottee has had further success as a commentator. Regularly reporting for Sky Sports and providing detailed analysis of the game. During the 2010 World Cup Cottee also provided punditry for the Malaysian network, Astro, and continues to do so for the Premier League.
