Steve McManaman

An outstanding former footballer who has established himself as a leading commentator, pundit and football speaker since hanging up his boots – Steve McManaman has worked on Setanta Sports, ESPN, BBC, ITV as well as fulfilled a regular role with BT Sport. One of football’s most talented players in the nineties and noughties, McManaman enjoyed a fast start to his playing career. Having come through Liverpool’s famed academy, with John Barnes as his mentor, McManaman progressed into the first team under Graeme Souness.

At just 19, he was a regular in the team during the 1991-92 season – making 51 appearances, partly due to Barnes’ long-term injury. He was Man of the Match when Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-0 to win the FA Cup. McManaman’s reputation continued to grow and he made his England debut in 1994, making his first of 37 appearances for England.

Though Liverpool struggled somewhat in the years that McManaman played for them, the team revolved around McManaman. He made the PFA Player of the Year shortlist on three occasions before he eventually moved onto Real Madrid after nine years with the club. At Real Madrid, McManaman enjoyed the silverware that had largely eluded him at Liverpool, winning the Champions League twice to become the first Englishman to do so. In total, he managed eight trophies to become England’s greatest export. Former manager, Vicente Del Bosque was complimentary of him, describing McManaman as a glue that held the team together, providing the team with confidence and positivity; calling him a great leader.

McManaman is remembered fondly by Liverpool’s fans and his accolades point to an extremely talented footballer. In 2013 he was placed at number 20 in Liverpool’s official list of 100 Players Who Shook The Kop. He was listed at third place in Sky Sports’ Greatest Goals-Assists Partnerships in the Premier League in 2018.
