Goalkeeper For Leeds & Arsenal

Jovan ‘John’ Lukic was born in 1960 and is a retired goalkeeper who spent all of his legendary career at just two clubs – Leeds United and Arsenal. He was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Yugoslavian parents and was christened Jovan. However, he was always known as John in the footballing world. At a height of six foot four he was one of Leeds United‘s tallest ever goalkeepers. He is one of only a small handful of players to have played professional football in four separate decades.

He also boasts the honour of having won the League Championship with two different clubs. In his illustrious career he was considered one of the best and most dependable goalkeepers of his generation.

John showed a great deal footballing promise from an early age and, as a result of this talent, he signed for Leeds United when he was a schoolboy. He eventually made his debut for the team in 1979 and he subsequently went on to play a total of one hundred and sixty-five games in his first stint for the side. He made a record one hundred and forty six consecutive appearances in League games. He left Leeds in 1983 when he transferred to Arsenal.

They were attracted by his ability and talent, and wanted him as a replacement for Pat Jennings. John was a key figure at Arsenal and he was the club’s number one by the middle of the 1984-1985 season. John was much loved by the Arsenal fans as he always gave consistent performances never letting the club down. He was ever present in the team during the late 1980s and he played a total of two hundred and seventy-seven games for the Gunners before returning to Elland Road.

Initially his second spell at Leeds proved to be one of the best periods of his career. He had a great season in 1991-1992 when his side won the League. He also won a runners up medal in the League Cup in 1995-1996.

In 1996 John moved back to Arsenal where he became one of the oldest players ever to play in a UEFA Champions League match. In 2000, at the age of almost forty, he played for his team in a match against Lazio. John retired from football in 2001 and now coaches part time. His son, also called John, has followed in his father’s foot-steps and has played football as a professional goalkeeper.  John is a true goalkeeping legend and is popular as an after dinner speaker.
