Ian Wright MBE became one of the biggest stars in football in the 90s, turning out for Arsenal and England and becoming a hero for both in the process. A symbol of hard work, passion and patriotism, Ian Wright earned plaudits across the country and beyond. He has since become a renowned television football speaker.
Spending fifteen years as an elite level footballer in the best British leagues, Ian earned his place at each club, scoring goals galore throughout his career and leaving club football having made 501 appearances and bagging 239 goals. Not to mention 33 England caps, which yielded nine goals.
Having joined Crystal Palace from semi-pro district football team Greenwich Borough in 1985, Ian scored nine goals in his debut season. In his second season he turned up the style and went through the gears once more to come out with 24 goals in 33 games to help take the club back to the top flight. In 1990 Ian scored two goals in one of Crystal Palace FC’s most dramatic moments, in the FA Cup Final against Manchester United, forcing a replay. He was voted as the club’s Player of the Century in 2005. His time at Palace opened up a £2.5 million transfer to Arsenal in 1991, a club record fee.
At Arsenal he hit the ground running, scoring on his League Cup debut and following it up with a hat-trick on his league debut. He quickly became a fan favourite and would retain that status throughout his days at Arsenal. He remains a popular figure amongst Gunners fans, and was voted fourth in a 50 Greatest Players poll on the official Arsenal website in 2008. It is with Arsenal and England that Ian Wright is most commonly associated and his journey to the top was punctuated by a number of great performances that showed his talent and willingness to put his body on the line for the good of his team. In his final season with Arsenal he was rewarded with a Premier League Winners medal.
One of his finest moments came in one of England’s finest performances since 1966, against Italy. The team drew 0-0 in Rome to qualify for the World Cup in 1997 and while there showed a mental strength and tenacity that brought great pride in the England team.
Since hanging up his boots, Ian has become a sought-after motivational football speaker, making a name with the BBC, ITV and Fox Sports as an insightful, engaging pundit and was awarded a MBE in recognition of his sporting career. He offers shrewd perspectives on tactics, footballing life and the skill needed to rise to the top of the game.
