Frank Worthington

Former English Footballer

Former England footballer and sports speaker Frank Worthington spent his career playing for teams around the globe; with stints in England, South Africa and America Worthington was a well-respected player who remained in the game well into his 40’s. Worthington eventually retired in the early 1990’s and went on to become a successful football speaker and guest on both the sporting and corporate after dinner speaker circuit.

Beginning his career with Huddersfield Town in 1966 Frank Worthington had long intended to become a professional footballer, coming from a family of well-established football speakers and players Frank had two elder brothers already playing for Halifax Town as well as a nephew Gary who would go on to play for Frank’s old team Huddersfield.

During his professional playing career Frank Worthington made more than 750 English appearances, and played for more than a dozen British teams. Worthington’s longest serving role as player and football speaker were for Huddersfield Town, Leicester City and Birmingham City. Worthington made his first appearance for a foreign team in 1979 when he went on loan to Philadelphia Fury for a single season.

In 1987 Frank Worthington made his first appearance as an after dinner speaker and football manager, when he began managing Tranmere Rovers. Frank made further attempts at management in 1991 when he began working as the sports speaker and player-coach for Halifax Town where he gained some success during his two year tenure.
