David James

Former Goalkeeper Turned BT Sport Pundit

Former English goalkeeper turned BT Sport’s pundit, David James is a prolific name within sport. Having played for some of the countries’ top-tier teams including Liverpool and Manchester City as well as having represented England on 53 occasions, James has amassed an incredible skillset and sportsman mindset that he aims to inflict onto his audiences as an after dinner speaker.

Having begun his youth career with Watford FC, Dave helped the team win the FA Youth Cup before being selected to make his debut league appearance in 1990. With his performance earning him a place in England U21’s squad, he earnt 10 caps with the team before becoming a member of England B. Throughout his first season in the league, he managed to achieve Watford’s Player of the Seasonand would eventually be inducted into the teams Hall of Fame.

Since then, he has been signed by a number of prolific teams around the world. With more than 800 domestic appearances to his name, David became a significant team member to the likes of Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham United and Manchester City before becoming noticed internationally. Following on from his departure from Bournemouth, James was signed by Icelandic team IBV Vestmannaeyjar in 2013 before joining Indian Super League team, Kerala Blasters in 2014.

Internationally, David made his full debut in 1997 whilst playing for Liverpool. As the goalkeeper for England through some of the most important games of the 2010 World Cup, it’s evident that he is a leader within his field. With stories from the World Cup proving to be some of his favourites, his anecdotal material makes for an incredibly insightful and interesting after dinner speech.

Following on from his retirement from the pitch, David James has gone onto establish himself as a highly regarded manager and coach. Beginning with IBV and Luton Town, James was eventually signed as the player-manager of Kerala Blasters FC where he led the team to the 2014 Indian Super League Final. Joining the team once more in 2018, he managed to also take the team to finish 6th place of the 2017-18 Indian Super League season.

Outside of football, David is an avid philanthropist who has set up the David James Foundation in order to help develop farming techniques of third world countries. He is also an ambassador of Special Olympics and works closely with Access Sport in order to supply deprived areas of the UK with sports lessons and coaching. A keen artist, he has also auctioned some of his work in order to raise money for charity.

Having delved into the media career, James has become the face of football punditry with appearances including Euro’s Most Shocking Moments, BT Sport’s coverage of Premier League and Conference Premier matches and commentary for the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, David has competed on the seventeenth series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing where he was partnered up with professional, Nadiya Bychkova.
