Aitor Karanka

Aitor Karanka is a former professional footballer and the current manager of English Premier League club, Middlesbrough F.C. Karanka’s played mainly as a central defender (he also played the left back position on occasion). Karanka is most remembered for playing at Spanish clubs, Athletico Bilbao and Real Madrid, appearing in a staggering 275 La Liga games over the course of 13 seasons and winning a total of seven major titles with the latter.

In the late 2000’s, Karanka started a managerial career, notably working as an assistant manager at Real Madrid, and his own right in the current position of Manager at Middlesbrough F.C.

In June of 2010, Karanka fulfilled the position of assistant manager at former side Real Madrid, by newly appointed manager José Mourinho. Three years later, Karanka left the club, following the arrival of a new manager, who brought his own coaching staff. In November of 2013, Karanka was appointed the manager of Football League Championship side Middlesbrough F.C., replacing the previous manager, Tony Mowbray.

In April of 2015, in the club’s penultimate game of the season, Karanka sent Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper forward for an added-time corner kick, with the score of 3-3 away to Fulham. With the goalkeeper out of position, the opponents scored a winner through Ross McCormack, which sent Watford into the Premier League and jeopardised Middlesbrough’s own chances of promotion. Karanka qualified his team to the play-off final after a 5 -1 aggregate win over Brentford, but Karanka’s side lost the decisive match 0-2 to Norwich City at Wembley Stadium.

In August of 2015, Karanka signed a new four-year contract. Middlesbrough F.C. were consistently in high positions during the campaign.
