Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has signed a new deal with the Red Devils set to be worth up to £300,000 a week. The new contract will tie the 28-year-old to the club until June 2019 and ends long-term speculation about his future.
Rooney joined United from Everton in August 2004 and has scored 208 goals in 430 appearances for the club. He is now just 42 goals away from Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 249 for United.
Chelsea had more than one bid for the striker rejected in the summer and Sir Alex Ferguson claims he handed in a transfer request before he left the club; a statement the player has denied.
Manchester United will hope this signing sends a message about their intention to remain at the very top of English football despite currently sitting 11 points away from the Champions League places. Rooney has won five Premier League titles and one Champions League during his time at United.
