Leicestershire’s Molly Smitten-Downes is set to represent the nation at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Singing her own song Children of the Universe, the 26 year old hopes to rank higher than her predecessors, with Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck finishing 19th and 25th respectively in the past two years.
An experienced performer, Molly has enjoyed success by providing the vocals for Basshunter’s I Will Learn to Love You Again, as well as delivering her own material as a support artist for Jake Bugg, Labrinth, Chase and Status and Tinie Tempah.
Molly is overjoyed at the prospect of representing her country in one of the world’s most recognisable entertainment competitions;
“To represent the United Kingdom in such a huge competition, not only as a singer and performer but as a songwriter is an unbelievable honour. I hope I can do us proud.”
Discovered through the ‘BBC Introducing’ scheme for unsigned artists, Molly’s single has been described as ‘anthemic’ and ‘uplifting’, with a combination of ‘contemporary songwriting and real vocal quality’.
