History was made on Sunday, as Stephen Gallacher became the first man to retain the Dubai Desert Classic. The tournament is just Gallacher’s third main tour victory despite having 18 years on the circuit. A final par round was enough to clinch the title, finishing a staggering 16 under par.
Gallacher started badly in the final round with four consecutive bogeys which handed the lead to golf superstar Rory McIlroy. However, four birdies on the back nine allowed him to edge past runner-up Emilano Grillo.
Grillo looks like a prospect for the future, securing his lowest ever European Tour round and looking like a promising candidate for future Ryder Cups.
Stephen Gallacher is the grandson of legendary golfer Bernard Gallacher, and is putting together an extremely good run of form at this early stage of the season.
