Olympic winners and Champions speakers Joanna Rowsell Shand MBE, Jason Kenny OBE and Jade Jones MBE will be among the many Olympians and Paralympians who will be taking part in a special commemoration parade to be held in Manchester on 17 October.
The parade has been organised by Manchester City Council, the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) and will be the perfect showcase for Olympians who either hail from Manchester or use the city as their training base.
Gold medal winning cyclist Joanna Rowsell Shand lives in Manchester and taekwondo Olympian champion Jade Jones lives and trains in the city. Multiple gold winning cyclist Jason Kenny was born in Greater Manchester and he now lives with his gold medal winning colleague and wife Laura Trott (they married on 25 September) close to the Manchester Velodrome where they both train. The Velodrome is also a favourite haunt of Sir Bradley Wiggins who has used the facility many times to prepare for victory.
The Prime Minister Theresa May said of the parade: “It will be a celebration fit for heroes – and rightly so, because that is exactly what they are.”
Manchester City Council’s Deputy Leader Sue Murphy said: “The city has been a medal factory, pumping out golds as the home of British cycling and taekwondo.”
