Brit Awards 2014: Highlights and Victors

This year’s Brit Awards was one of the more memorable awards ceremonies of the past few years, with James Corden hosting for the third year running, music legend David Bowie being awarded the Best British Male trophy alongside a rather controversial speech by Artic Monkeys front man Alex Turner.

The winner’s from last night:

  • British Female Solo Artist: Ellie Goulding
  • British Breakthrough Act: Bastille
  • British Group: Artic Monkeys
  • British Male Solo Artist: David Bowie
  • British Single: Rudimental ft. Ella Eyre – Waiting All Night
  • British Video: One Direction – Best Song Ever
  • British Album of the Year: Artic Monkeys
  • International Female Solo Artist: Lorde
  • International Group: Daft Punk
  • International Male Solo Artist: Bruno Mars

Kate Moss was present to accept David Bowie’s award with announcer Noel Gallagher commenting: “You maniacs didn’t think he’d actually be here? David Bowie’s too cool for that.”

Bowie becomes the oldest artist to ever receive a Brit Award, at the age of 67, his award coming 18 years after his last successful ceremony. In an emotive speech read by Moss, Bowie pleaded with Scottish viewers to stay as part of the United Kingdom and vote ‘No’ in the Scottish Independence referendum.

The 2014 Brits was also the most youthful ceremony to ever take place, with almost every award receiver being in the 20s or younger, with International Female Solo Artist Lorde tying with Joss Stone as the youngest ever musician to become a Brit victor, at the age of 17.

The night was shrouded in controversy after Artic Monkey’s front man Alex Turner’s rather brash acceptance speech, that was seen to take a cynical view on the modern day pop and music industry. Turner claimed, rock and roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it.” Turner’s carefully chosen words have been heralded as genius by some, but also seen as an uncalled for cynicism of an industry controlled by its consumers.

Whatever your view on the proceedings, the evening is sure to stick in the memory of many and made for wonderful viewing for the 4.2 million viewers that tuned in to watch.
