American comedian, writer and musician, Rich Hall is best known for his successful stand-up career not only in the USA but internationally, and writing/performing in a range TV sketch shows and documentaries.
Born in Alexandra, Virgina, USA, he grew up in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. At the start of his career, he performed as a street comedian with a suitcase and stand, performing skits for gathering crowds. Hall’s first professional job was as a writer and performer for the original David Letterman Show in 1980, and sketch comedy series Fridays, which he was apart of from 1980 until the shows end in 1982. He is the only Fridays member to be a regular on Saturday Night Live, and was eventually asked to be the writer for the show. In 1986, Hall had his own TV special on Showtime called Vanishing America, which was subsequently turned into a book.
After winning a Perrier Comedy Award (now known as an Edinburgh Comedy Award) in 2000 for his characterisation of Tennessean country musician Otis Lee Crenshaw, Hall became known in the United Kingdom. He regularly appears on popular panel TV shows such as QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Have I Got News for You. He has featured on various Live at the Apollo stand-up shows, achieving a cult status for some of his jokes. Hall has had numerous BBC TV series documentary of his own across multiple BBC channels, such as Rich Hall’s Badly Funded Think Tank, and has appeared on BBC2’s popular TV show Top Gear. In 2010, he also appeared as one of the stand-up acts on Channel 4‘s Comedy Gala, a benefit show organised by Channel 4 to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. More recently, Hall voiced Idaho man in the film Arthur Christmas.
