Malawian comedian, Daliso Chaponda, was described as ‘the best comedian’ Britain’s Got Talent had ever seen by Simon Cowell when he appeared on the show in 2017, and it was an apt description. Confident, hilarious and often controversial, Daliso is unafraid to pick up on political and social issues and use them in his shows, always earning a lot of laughs from his audiences.
Daliso embarked upon a career of comedy while he was in Canada, and he performed at comedy clubs across the country with his acclaimed one man show, ‘Feed This Black Man’. Eventually, he brought his hugely entertaining talent to the UK, where he entered the ITV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. He was such a hit with the judges and audience that he was given the golden buzzer by Amanda Holden, sending him straight to the live shows. He progressed all the way to the final, where he came third behind pianist Tokio Myers and eight-year-old magician Issy Simpson.
Daliso has successfully used the show as a boost to propel his career. He embarked on a tour of the UK in February and due to its enormous success has had to add more dates. His success goes beyond Britain though, and he has performed all over the world, appearing in comedy clubs and festivals in places as far flung as Melbourne, Singapore and Cape Town.
Besides being a comedian, Daliso is an accomplished writer, publishing science fiction, fantasy and murder mysteries in several magazines and anthologies. His next big venture is featuring in his own Radio 4 show called ‘Daliso Chaponda: Citizen of Nowhere’, which is sure to be a humorous but thought-provoking look at the historical relationship between Britain and Africa.
