Affectionately known as ‘The Pub Landlord’ due to his alter-ego character, Al Murray is one of the UK’s most loved comedians. Reigniting his career after a successful stint in the reality cookery show Hell’s Kitchen, Murray became a household name and is commonly seen hosting many comedy shows across a multitude of channels including BBC, Sky TV and ITV.
Born 10th May 1986 in Buckinghamshire, Murray graduated Oxford University with an MA in Modern History, contradicting the stereotypical pub licensee persona that he undertakes during his Pub Landlord alter ego.
He was named as one of The Observers 50 Funniest Comedians in 2003, and in 2007 was voted 16th in Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand Up Comedians. Beginning his career shadowing comedy legends, the Pub Landlord made his on stage debut in 1994 supporting on a Harry Hill tour.
Murray was given his own chat show in 2007, titled Al Murray’s Happy Hour which proved extremely successful, and later being nominated for a National Television Award. He then went on to front quiz show Compete for the Meat in 2011 on Dave.
Having appeared three times on the Royal Variety Show as the Pub Landlord, Murray has won the Perrier Award as a comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1999 and been nominated for an Olivier Award after successful stints within the West End.
To add to this he has sold out arena tours, with The Observer describing it as ‘the funniest live comedy show of the decade’. Murray currently has 7 live stand-up DVDs and four books on sale, showing that he has a wide fan base and an ability to constantly entertain as a comedian.
