Jeffrey Brian Straubel, more notably known as JB Straubel is the co-founder and chief technical officer of Tesla Inc. He is also known to be on the Board of Directors for SolarCity and as a lecturer at Stanford University, teaching an energy storage integration class in the Atmosphere and Energy Program.
Prior to his work at Tesla, Straubel was also co-founder of Volacom. Here, he worked closely with Burt Rutan and Scaled Composites to design a specialised high-altitude aircraft platform using a hydrogen-powered electric power plant. He also helped to create a new long-endurance hybrid propulsion concept that was later licensed to Boeing.
His main job duties at Tesla involve overseeing the technical and engineering design of the vehicles. He is also responsible for new technology evaluation, research and development, technical diligence review of key vendors and partners, IP and systems validation testing.
JB was awarded with Innovator of the Year by MIT’s Technology Review in their annual TR35 innovators in the world under the age of 35 in 2008. Later that year, he also spoke at the MIT’s Emtech conference on a panel on green transportation in Boston.
As an outstanding speaker, he was honoured as keynote speaker at the Stanford Alumni EDAY and spoke at the DESIGN West conference produced by UBM Electronics at the McEnery Convention Centre in California. Straubel has also amazingly achieved a 240 volt, street conversion world electric vehicle racing record in an electric Porsche 944.
