English Businessman, Nick Jenkins is the founder of the online greetings card retailer Moonpig. Nick is also recognised as a ‘dragon’ on BBC Dragons’ Den which he appeared on between 2015 and 2017.
Nick had never expected his career to take him where it has, while at University he read Russian Literature and had aspired for a career in the army. However the collapse of the Berlin Wall led to him giving up his place at Sandhurst and accepting a job offer in Moscow. The following eight years were spent working as a commodity trader until he eventually returned to the UK. Upon his return to the UK Nick spent a year at Cranfield University studying for an MBA while having the chance to create several business plans. One of these business plans developed into Moonpig.
Nick is a true representation of someone who fought for his goal which is shown in his perseverance with Moonpig. Nick took five years of losses and four rounds of fundraising before Moonpig eventually made a profit however now Moonpig ships to millions of customers around the world and has become a hugely recognisable household name with an impeccable reputation. In 2011 Moonpig was sending out twelve million cards a year and Nick proceeded to sell Moonpig for an estimated £120 million to PhotoBox, with thirty-five per cent of the company Nick still had a £42million windfall. Prior to the sell of Moonpig, it achieved Number three in the Sunday Times Profit Track 100.
Nick is a member of the Impact Ventures UK investment committee and since 2008 has been actively investing in other start-up businesses mostly in technology and internet retail space. The aim of this committee is to invest in social enterprises using innovation to find better solutions to social issues in the UK. Nick is passionate about helping others being a patron of Shivia a charity that helps some of the poorest families in West Bengal to raise their standard of living through enterprise.
