Narayana Murthy CBE is an Indian software engineer and IT industrialist, best known as the founder of Infosys Limited, a global software consulting company providing business consulting, technology, engineering, and outsourcing services. Created in 1981, Narayana served as Infosys Limited’s CEO until 2002 and Chairman until 2011 – at present, he is the Chairman Emeritus. Thanks to Narayana, Infosys was featured in NASDAQ in 1999.
Prior to dominating the entrepreneurial landscape, Narayana attended the National Institute of Engineering, graduating in 1967 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Two years later, he earned a Master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Narayana is famed for being the thought-leader, designer and person responsible for implementing the Global Delivery Model, which has been credited for the influential surge of IT services outsourcing from India. He has initiated key corporate governance programs in India, and continues to advise several Asian countries on all things IT.
A testament to his expanse of knowledge, Narayana plays a key role in multiple business groups. These include serving on the boards of HSBC, Ford Foundation, Rhodes Trust, the Indian School of Business and the UN Foundation. He was a member of the Unilever board between until 2010, the Chairman of the International Institute of Information Technology until 2012 and the Chairman of the Indian Institute of Management until 2007. Additionally, Narayana has also been an important board member of Cornell University, Singapore Management University, INSEAD (Paris), Wharton School and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
Over the course of his prominent career, Narayana has been listed among the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine, and has been ranked as one of the ten most-admired global business leaders in 2005. Narayana was described as the “father of the Indian IT sector” by Time magazine, thanks to innovative outsourcing in India.
Narayana has been honoured with countless accolades in recognition of his contribution to the IT industry in India, including the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India, the Legion d’honneur by the Government of France, and the CBE by the British government. He is also the first Indian winner of Ernst and Young’s World Entrepreneur of the year award and the Max Schmidheiny Liberty prize, as well as appearing in the rankings of innovators published by BusinessWeek, Time, CNN, Fortune, India Today, Business Standard, Forbes and Financial Times. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering and has been awarded 25 honorary doctorates from universities in India and abroad.
