Sophie Walker

Leader Of The Women's Equality Party

Sophie Walker is the leader of the Women’s Equality Party, Britain’s newest and fastest-growing political party that sprang into life at the last General Election from deep frustration at the glacial pace of change for women and girls in the UK. She was one of the founding members of WE, the first non-partisan political party that aims to unite people from all backgrounds and experiences to achieve equal rights for women so that everyone can flourish.

Sophie previously worked as an international news agency journalist for nearly twenty years, covering business, finance and politics from Paris to Washington, travelling also as diplomatic correspondent to Iraq and Afghanistan. She is an ambassador for the National Autistic Society, campaigning for better support and understanding of autism – particularly in women and girls – and has written a book, Grace Under Pressure about the experience of raising her elder daughter, who has autism.

In January 2016 Sophie was voted to represent the Women’s Equality Party in the London Mayoral election on a manifesto seeking to close the city’s 23 percent pay gap; create affordable childcare and housing for women as well as accessible, safe transport; and end rising rates of sexual harassment and violence against women and girls in the capital. The party gained more than 350,000 votes in total in elections across London, Scotland and Wales and Sophie won one in twenty votes for London Mayor.

Sophie is also a keen runner and has said marathon training is the perfect preparation for a life in politics.
