Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer under Theresa May’s Conservative Government between 2016 and 2019, Phillip Hammond is a highly-respected MP involved in politics since 1997. Hammond grew up in Epping, Essex and was educated at University College, Oxford where he studied politics, economics and philosophy. After becoming a company director at healthcare company, Castlemead Ltd, he would advise the government of Malawi before he was first elected to British parliament.
He first held the constituency of Runnymede and Weybirdge in 1997, on its establishment holding the office for the past six general elections, receiving an overwhelming majority on every occasion. In parliament he would serve the Environment, Transport and Regions Select Committee until he was promoted by William Hague as a front bench spokesman in health.
Various other roles as a spokesman followed, before he became the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 2007 under the Conservative leader, David Cameron. In 2007, Cameron would move Hammond to a role as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and when Cameron assumed office at the formation of the Coalition Government in 2010, he would become the Secretary of State for Transport.
He once again proved himself to be a shrewd operator under Cameron, earning promotions to Secretary of State for Defence and later the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.
After a successful stint under David Cameron, Hammond was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer under incoming Prime Minister, Theresa May following the EU referendum results which favoured Britain’s exit from the EU. Hammond showed his willingness to see Brexit through, saying: “no ifs, no buts, no second referendums” before he added that the British people didn’t vote to become poorer or “less secure”. When May announced her resignation in July 2019, Hammond followed suit, allowing for the incoming Prime Minister to freely appoint a chancellor.
