Former British Ambassador to the United States

Former British Ambassador to the United States, Sir Peter Westmacott is an expert in international relations, government and politics, the US and European economy, as well as business management. He is currently a Fellow at IOP and Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center at the Kennedy School at Harvard University.

Sir Peter Westmacott has had a varied and impressive career that has included being a former Ambassador to France from 2007-12 and Ambassadorto Turkey from 2002-06. During this time he dealt with a suicide bomb attack directed at the British Consulate in Istanbul, killing 15 people, and thus went on to be closely involved in the negotiations to bring Turkey into the EU.

Having spent 40 years in the Britsh Diplomatic Service, Peter also spent four years in Iran and worked in the Eurpean Commision in Brussels. From 1990 to 1993, he was Deputy Private Secretary to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Moreover, in 1997, he was also the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Director for the Americas until 2000 when he decided to take a seat on the board as Deputy Under Secretary. After being British Ambassador to the United States, Peter spent a semester at the Harvard Kennedy School as a Fellow at The Institute of Politics and Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center.

As a result of his outstanding work within the diplomatic service, Sir Peter Westmacott was appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 1993. He was then appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in the 2000 New Year Honours, before being promoted to Knight Commander in the 2003 Birthday Honours. Not only that but in 2016 Peter was then appointed Knight Grand Cross in The Queen’s Birthday Honours.
