John Bercow

Speaker Of The House of Commons

Famed for his outspoken style as Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow is a preeminent politician who has served as a member of the Conservative Party since 1986. In that time he has held a number of high-profile roles, not least his decade long spell as the Speaker which ended in 2019. He assumed office in his constituency of Buckingham, and has served the area as MP since 1997. This followed on from spells as a councillor for the London Borough of Lambeth between 1986 and 1990.

Under the leadership of Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard, Bercow was part of the shadow cabinet between 2001-2004. In 2009 he would throw his hat into the ring for the vacant position after Speaker Michael Martin resigned. Following his success in the Speakership election in 2009, Bercow assumed the role of Speaker. He has since been elected to the post twice more, becoming the first Speaker since WW2 to serve the House during four Prime Minister’s reigns.

Having been at the centre of inter party and cabinet scuffles, Bercow has been charged with keeping order in the House of Commons. His unique way of keeping order in parliament has earned him significant media attention.

Unafraid to tell off his fellow MPs, including the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, Bercow has been famed for his put-downs and humourous snaps. One YouTube video entitled “Order, ORDER! The best moments from John Bercow” put together by ODN News has already racked up 390k views. It is for his entertaining and articulate speaking style that he has become internationally-recognised. The well-spoken and entertaining star of the House of Commons gallery may have struck a chord with audiences worldwide, but he is also widely respected as a British MP, with many MPs praising his contribution as Speaker, after he announced his resignation in a teary speech to the Commons.

Highly-respected on both sides of the divide, Labour Party Leader, Jeremy Corbyn said: “This parliament is stronger for your being Speaker. Our democracy is stronger for your being the Speaker.”

Conservative MP, Michael Gove added, “Your commitment to your principles and to your constituents is unwavering and an example to others”.

Making his transition from Speaker to after dinner speaker should be an easy one for Bercow, as he brings to the table political nous, as well as tales of controlling scuffles that will entertain and educate all manner of audiences at conferences and gala dinners in the coming years.
