Horst Köehler


Known primarily for being the former German Prime Minister, Horst Köehler is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union party. An expert in economics, Horst has had a varied and accomplished career in politics, the civil service and banking.

After graduating from the University of Tübingen in 1969, Horst became an academic assistant at the University’s Institute, where he obtained a PhD in Economics in 1977. He spent a number of years at the Federal Ministry of Economics, before he took a position in the State Chancellery of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Horst also held positions as the Federal Ministry of Finance, State Secretary, Germany’s chief-negotiator of the Maastricht Treaty and Personal Representative (Sherpa) of Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

A key political figure, Horst was first elected to be Prime MInister in 2004, for a five-year term. He was then reelected for a second term of a further five years in 2009. However, during May 2010, Horst resigned from the position.

After his resignation, Horst has gone on to implement a better partnership with Africa, encourage a global transformation towards sustainability, and developed a better approach to international politics. As well as this, Horst continues to help raise awareness and contribute to a number of voluntary services, charities and honorary positions.
