Herman Van Rompuy


Herman Achille, Count Van Rompuy, served as the Prime Minister of Belgium and the first President of the European Council. He is currently a Belgian and European politician. Herman was the 66th Prime Minister of Belgium for almost a year until his predecessor regained his place in 2009.

Van Rompuy was appointed to the European Council as President on the 19th of November 2009, just shortly before he lost the position of Prime Minister. He maintained this position from 2009 until 2012, however was re-elected in 2012 and maintained the position for a further two years until 2014.

Van Rompuy was a chairman for the National Christian’s People’s Party from 1973 until 1977. Between 1975-1980, Van Rompuy worked in the ministerial cabinets of Gaston Greens and Leo Tindemans. He is currently a member of the CVP’s bureau, which he was elected to in 1978.

Later in his career, he became elected as a deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Budget from 1993 to 1999, which were being led by Jean-Luc Dehaene. Van Rompuy helped reduce Belgium’s debt over 30% from 135% to below 100% in 2003.
