With thirty-seven years experience in the British Diplomatic Service, Sir Christopher Meyer’s career has consisted of being Ambassador to the United States between 1997 and 2003. This was during Bill Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies where he spent five and a half years in Washington making him the longest-serving British Ambassador to the USA since the Second World War. His time in this position coincided with 9/11, the wars in Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan, and the preparation for war in Iraq.
Prior to this, Christopher has been Ambassador to Germany and had postings to the former Soviet Union, Spain and the European Union in Brussels. On top of these huge responsibilities he was also Press Secretary to Prime Minister Sir John Major, Press Secretary to Foreign Secretary, the late Lord Howe, and speech writer to three Foreign Secretaries, Anthony Crosland, James Callaghan and David Owen. Until March 2009 Christopher spent six years chairing the Press Complaints Commission.
Now a commentator on international affairs and the media he is widely recognised across television, radio and newspaper. Christopher shared with the world his time in the Diplomatic Service when he published DC Confidential in 2005. This was followed by Getting Our Way: 500 Years of Adventure and Intrigue: the Inside Story of British Diplomacy, the book was published in 2009 which led to it being created into a three-part TV series on BBC4. Christopher’s career continues to rocket, from making several documentaries to appearing in Inside The War Room: World War 3 and co-writing a six-part TV documentary series for Sky Atlantic.
Following his impressive services to The Diplomatic Service, Her Majesty The Queen appointed him a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1998. By 2003 he was appointed Court Assistant honoris causa by the Company and since 2013 he has been a Senior Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute.
Christopher is one of the most interesting speakers out there due to his completely unique career experiences. He captivates his audience’s attention with stories from his time in The Diplomatic Service from working with huge political names to what it was like during 9/11 and the wars. He has a huge area of expertise which can span over many topics from international affairs, British politics and Brexit to Peak performance, overcoming adversity and having drive and determination.
