Educated at Sevenoaks School before graduating from Bristol University where he read classical studies, Evans joined the Security Service in 1980 and initially worked in counter-espionage. Making a transition to protective security function just 5 years later, Lord Evans was tasked with dealing with internal and personnel security, before switching to domestic counter-terrorism in the late 1980s. For over a decade Lord Evans was at the forefront of the efforts to combat the domestic threat of groups such as the Provisional IRA during The Troubles.
With the violence in Northern Ireland greatly reduced in 1999 due to the Good Friday Agreement, Lords Evans moved to G-Branch, the section of MI5 which deals with international terrorism. There he became an expert on al-Qaeda and other branches of Islamic terrorism. Evans’ incredible ability and obvious prowess with the field led him to rise to the of head the section in 2001 (only just over a week before the 9/11 attacks), a position which put him on the service’s board of management. In 2005, he became Deputy Director-General before being promoted to head the organisation in 2007.
Speaking publicly about the threat the UK faces from digital espionage in 2007, Lord Jonathan Evans also spoke at RUSI on National Security in February 2008 showcasing his stature as a figure at the very forefront on British Intelligence and Security that could be tasked with engagements of the highest importance and sensibility. Also certificated in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors, something he would later go on to use to great effect, in September 2010, Evans said that Anwar al-Awlaki was the West’s Public Enemy No 1, this drew huge attention at the time and is something Lord Evans speaks about in greater depth throughout his presentations. Eventually appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to defence, Lord Jonathan Evans was recognised for the sheer magnitude and importance of his work.
Following his retirement as Director General, Evans joined the Board of HSBC Holdings as a Non-Executive Director. He is also a non-executive director of Ark Data Centres, a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute and an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. From 2014 to 2015 he was a non-executive director of the National Crime Agency. He has written occasionally in The Sunday Times on classic cars.
