Sir Stirling Moss OBE is one of legends of motorsports. An inductee into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, Sir Stirling has enjoyed success in a multitude of motorsport disciplines and is often known as ‘the greatest driver never to have won a world championship’. A wonderful and compelling motorsport speaker, Moss has perhaps the most extensive and varied experience and knowledge of motorsport, proving testament to a career that began in 1948.
Moss was known for not limiting his abilities to one motorsport discipline, competing in up to 62 races in one year. Moss drove 84 different marques during his career, including Cooper, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes, Porsche and Ferrari. Unlike motorsport drivers of modern times, Moss would compete in many different formulae often on the same day; making him one of the most accomplished racing drivers ever. Sir Stirling’s extensive career ensures that guests will enjoy him as a motorsport speaker; listening to his life in the fast lane and the people he met on the way to stardom.
One of Moss’ hugely famous achievements include his victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia race. Described as ‘The most epic drive. Ever’, by MotorTrend magazine, Moss drove one of four factory owned Mercedes 300 SLR cars. Sir Stirling’s time for the 1000 mile race was 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds at an average speed of 98.5mph. This record still stands to this day as the race was discontinued two years later and now held as a tribute road rally event.
Moss’ career was cut prematurely short after a huge accident in 1962 at Goodwood. Stirling spent a month in a coma and six months partially paralysed, moss recovered but felt he no longer had the instinctive command of the cars he once felt so comfortable in.
Sir Stirling made a comeback to racing in 1980, racing in the British Touring Car Championship alongside Martin Brundle. Ever since then, Moss has campaigned his own cars in a number of historic racing events, including the Le Mans Legends series, before retiring in 2011 after scaring himself out on track. Moss is a master of risk consideration, racing in a time of intense danger in which a mistake could be hugely costly. As a sports speaker, Moss relates the perils of motorsport with lessons that can be taken away and used in everyday life.
Sir Stirling is a favourite on the after dinner circuit, with experience of a multitude of speaking engagements across the world. A consummate and charming professional, Sir Stirling can tailor his content as a motorsport speaker to meet any client’s briefs.
