Laura Kuenssberg is a British journalist. In July 2015, she was appointed as the political editor of BBC News, the first woman to hold the position, in succession to Nick Robinson.
Kuenssberg was born in Italy, while her was working in the country. Shortly after this, they moved back to the UK and Laura grew up in Glasgow with her brother and sister. Kuenssberg went onto study History at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a journalism course at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. alongside working on an NBC News Political programme.
Shortly after returning to Britain, Kuenssberg worked for a local radio before working for a cable television channel in Glasgow. Now having a well established start in journalism and television, Kuenssberg joined the BBC North East and Cumbria in the year 2000. Kuenssberg won a regional Royal Television Society award for her work the BBC’s home affairs correspondent whilst also producing segments for the social affairs editor Niall Dickson. Before working for the BBC, Kuenssberg reported for Channel 4 News.
After being appointed chief political correspondent for BBC News, Kuenssberg reported for BBC One bulletins, Daily Politics as well as BBC News. In September of 2011, Kuenssberg embarked on her next television role of business editor for ITV News. Kuenssberg also contributed towards business reporting on ITV’s current affairs stand, called Tonight. In 2013, Laura Kuenssberg made her debut co-newscasting News at Ten with Alastair Stewart.
In late 2013, Kuenssberg announced that she would leave ITV and return to the BBC. Taking on the position of chief correspondent as well as being a presenter on Newsnight. She then went on to join the Newsnight team in early 2014.
In July of 2015, she was appointed as the BBC’s political editor; a previously male dominated position. Kuenssberg is currently the face of politics at the BBC and played a key role in the reporting of Britain decision to leave the EU.
